Day 48 Pope Central

Day 48- For those of you who know me well, you probably know I do not do well with organized religion.  That being said, one of the things that I really wanted to do when I went to Rome, was to go to the Vatican.  I am actually a huge fan of the latest Pope…so it was time to check out his city!  I have always wanted to see the Sistine Chapel as well…so Vatican here we come! Your trip to the Vatican really begins when you try to make reservations.  You can book through tour groups, but they are like twice the price as if you book through the Vatican itself.  Just  a friendly warning though…if you lack patience like me it might almost be worth paying double…but I ended up working through the angst and finally making a reservation! In order...

Day 47 A Walk in the Park

Day 47 Began with a trip through our little neighborhood.  We knew that we were going to be out and about all day, and so we decided to stop in a local shop and get some sandwiches to eat along the way.  It just so happens that we stopped in a sandwich shop of the most awesome and quintessential Italian shop.  Behind the counter was a raven haired Italian women, who looked like she stepped out of a tour book.  When we were trying to order, she corrected our Italian, had us repeat words with her, like an on the spot lesson!  She was great! And when we would finally say the words correctly, she would get so excited!  After we got our sandwiches I asked if I could take her picture, and it was like she was getting an award!  She was thrilled, and she had Reid and I...

Day 46 Time to Conquer Roma

Day 46- First let me begin with a fact that shows my ignorance…Rome is not Rome in Italy…it is Roma…Naples is Napoli…and Florence Firenze…etc.  So let me just ask this question…why don’t we just call these cities by their Italian names??? Today was our first day in this city full of history and we were going to conquer it like a teeny tiny invading army!  You almost need to feel like you are going into battle a bit in Roma…because there is just a tiny bit of chaos here…like a modern day battled field filled with tourists holding maps, sights to see, Italians going every which way, and Vespas ready to attack at every corner! The first sight on our list, was the neighbor just down the street, the Colosseum!  As...

Day 45 Sorrento to Rome

Day 45-  Transition days are always a little difficult!  It is hard to say goodbye to a place that you have come to love, and have to move on.  Well, and let’s be honest here…it is hard to pack all your crap up, load the car, clean the apartment, make sure your not forgetting anything…and then say goodbye.. But today we were excited, because we were off to Rome!  Rome is a city that I have always dreamed of visiting!  I have seen it in countless movies, read about it’s amazing history, seen pictures of it’s historic places…now it was my turn to go! As we approached Rome, I could feel the butterflies in my tummy, almost like I was nervous…and then we got into the city and I realized why I had butterflies in my...

Day 44 One Last Day

Day 44- Today was our last day in Sorrento.  We chose to use this day to rest, sleep in a bit, and then walk into Sorrento one last time…and we did just that!  Reid was able to see Stella…the Guns and Music store (I still can’t get over the name of that store).  We got to wave to the barber who gave Reid his haircut, and have lunch in the town square one last time.  The restaurant we ate at had waiters with tuxedos on!  The prices were not expensive, but the food was delicious!  We had a French coffee after lunch…it was coffee, Grand Marinier (I know I spelled it wrong), and some cream… oh my gosh it was delicious!! As we ate we looked at the people and the cars going around the roundabout! Here were a few observations: *Nobody stops...

Day 43- Naples Not So Big On You

Day 43-  I have heard mixed reviews of Naples, but honestly most of them were a bit negative!  Naples is crowded, dirty, a bit scary, and just not super tourist friendly…am I going to let that stop me? No!  And actually for one HUGE reason…the National Museum in Naples.  This museum has all the treasures that they took out of Pompeii for you to go and look at.  All I have heard is that it is so important to go and see the artifacts here..as must see.  Okay, so listening to my guru Rick Steves, I decided that I had to go! We got up, ate breakfast and headed on our walk to Sorrento.  We waved to the barber, walked by Reid’s girlfriend at the “Guns and Music” store (a cute dog named Stella, and headed down to the harbor!  We actually...
